The default, and why it is not the whole answer
Snapchat describes expiry at the level of the individual Snap, not the Story as a whole: the My Story Timer page says a subscriber "can choose when your Snaps on My Story expire", and that "Snaps on My Story normally delete after 24 hours". So a Story built across an evening comes down piece by piece rather than all at once.
What the help pages do not spell out is that each Snap counts from its own posting moment. That is the usual explanation for a Story shrinking while you watch it, and it fits the wording above, but we are flagging it as inference rather than stating it as documented.
The default is genuinely a default rather than a rule. Snapchat+ subscribers can set a Snap to expire after "1 hour, 6 hours, 12 hours, 24 hours, 2 days, 3 days, or 1 week", so any article saying every Story lasts exactly 24 hours is describing the platform as it used to be.

Highlights: the exception that keeps Stories
Highlights are how a Snapchat account keeps a Story past its timer. The poster picks Story content and pins it to their profile, where it stays until they take it down.
For anyone looking at a public account, this is the practical difference between an empty result and something to watch. Most accounts post Stories rarely, so at any given moment there is usually nothing live — but an account that uses Highlights has content sitting on its public page permanently.
It is worth checking Highlights first when a Story comes back empty. An account with no live Story may still have months of pinned content.
What happens at the deadline
The post is removed from the Story, and its viewer list goes with it. The poster loses the record of who watched at the same moment everyone else loses the content.
Nothing recovers it. Not a tool, not a cache, not support. The only copy that survives is one someone deliberately saved before the deadline — the poster to their own Memories, or a viewer who downloaded it while it was live.
This is the one hard limit worth planning around. If a Story matters to you, the window to act on it is while it is still up.
Twenty-four hours is the documented default. If a public Story is worth keeping past that, the file has to be saved while the post is still live.

Almost always the per-snap clock, not a bug: you remember posting the last snap and forget the first one went up hours earlier. The Story looks like it expired ahead of schedule while each piece simply followed its own timer.
The rarer causes are a manual delete, a moderation removal, or an account switching to private — which pulls public posts out of reach in one move rather than hiding them.
How to check what is live right now
Timers are per-post and invisible from outside, so there is no way to know how much of a Story remains. Reloading is the whole method.
- Open the account and see what the Story currently holds — that is everything inside the window at this moment.
- Check the Highlights on the same profile for anything the poster kept past the timer.
- An empty result usually means nothing is live, not that something is hidden.
- Reload later rather than waiting for a notification. Logged-out viewing has no subscription mechanism.
